Exploring Dereth: Linvak Tukal

By themselves, the Linvak Mountains are an imposing sight. Towering above the lands of southeastern Dereth, these formidable peaks challenge adventurers not only with their impressive heights and frigid temperatures, but with the creatures that dwell in the harsh climate as well. However, those willing and able to endure that environment may come across an even more imposing structure. Atop one particular summit stands a massive collection of stone and masonry, the Lugian city of Linvak Tukal.

Like many creatures across Dereth, the Lugians spent their early years on this world building or repossessing fortresses in key locations. Unlike most of them, though, they would take those efforts one step further when, like humans and Tumeroks before them, they began construction on a proper city of their own. In the eleventh year since the fall of the One Olthoi Queen, that city was completed, and it was given the name "Linvak Tukal", or "Great Tukal" in the Lugian language. Lord Kresovus quickly rose in influence to take leadership over the many clans within the city, and he even proposed, to the protest of many of his people, to begin peace talks with the Isparian nations. For a brief time, it appeared that the Lugian journey to prominence on Dereth would be a peaceful one.

Of course, that wouldn't be the case in the end. Just as they had with the Tumeroks, the Virindi approached the Lugians and offered them an alliance. Kresovus turned them away, but one faction of his people, called the Gotrok, accepted the strange creatures' proposal. It was the Gotrok who controlled the numerous chorizite mines throughout the island and, as a result, bore the brunt of human attacks into Lugian territory, so they were eager to accept an arrangement that would grant them both power and an opportunity to harm the creatures that had plagued them for so long. As part of this arrangement, the Gotrok would provide the Virindi with a constant supply of chorizite ore for use in experimentation, while the Virindi would return a quantity of that ore in refined form to be cast into weapons (the first use of "hollow" weapons by Lugians). Soon, the Gotrok established a siege camp around the base of Linvak Tukal, hoping to wear down and overtake their former brethren.

In the many years since its construction, Linvak Tukal has endured much. The Gotrok siege continues to this day, despite interference by humans as well as the Gotrok abandoning their Virindi masters. The Linvak Lugians entered into an alliance with the humans and Aun Tumeroks, turning their city into a hub of activity for all three races. Tukal has even survived an attack by strange, shadowy creatures in which Lord Kresovus was briefly taken hostage and replaced by a dark doppelganger. Yes, Linvak Tukal has survived a great deal, seemingly as unmoving and immutable as the mountain upon which it was built. And if its proud inhabitants continue to defend it in the manner they have these last years, it may endure for as long as the cold, gray mountain as well.
