This quest involves two old foes, Aerbex and Nuhmudira. Both are seeking capture of the Harbinger to suit their own purposes...Aerbex, for research in self-thought and Nuhmudira, to restore the natural mana flow of Auberean. Their rivalry and the race to capture of the Harbinger complicate matters for the brave human warriors they hope to recruit to assist them. Each has placed his forces in the access tunnels controlled by the other to repel those seeking the Harbinger. This is a difficult quest but the reward is great. Brave warriors choose your leader, Aerbex or Nuhmudira and go forth to capture the Harbinger.

Preparation

Go to Yanshi and speak to the Issk, the Sclavus (12.9S 46.5E) or Vincadi, the Virindi (12.6.S 46.7). Both will give a book.

Experimentation, written by Aerbax, explains the struggle of the Virindi who are seeking self-thought and studying the personality of humans and other creatures and that he wishes to have “…a collection of minor specimens so that I may track down these specimens in their natural habitat when the proclivity to test these subjects arises. The greatest of these specimens is the entity that you Isparians refer to as the Harbinger."

Natural Order, written by Nuhmudira, explains that after the demise of Gaerlan, she has dedicated herself to making life on Auberean simpler. In her studies she found that "…this being (the Harbinger), having been removed from the mana streams, is slowly draining the magic from this world. If it is not returned to the place where it was intended to rest, it will ultimately tear this world asunder."

Both texts include a list of items needed to secure a reward upon completion of the quest:

One point will be added to the skill that matches the item that you submit prior to entering portal Tunnels to the Harbinger's Lair.

Getting There

Once you have the item that corresponds to the skill you wish to raise, head to Yanshi. A quick route is by using the Abandoned Mines (Subway) near Arwic (34.9N, 54.5E) and taking the Shoushi Portal. Then head to the Yanshi portal (34.9S,74.4E) and finally run to Old Yanshi (12.7S,46.4E). It is a very good idea to have Dispel gems or a mage that has the ability to dispel harmful spells.

The Battle

There are two portals to the Tunnels of the Harbinger, one controlled by Issk and the other by Vincadi. Both dungeons have the same layout but have different creatures defending the tunnels. The tunnel controlled by Issk is filled with Dual Elementals, Virindi, Sishalti Tentacles, Tendril and Eye Stalks. While the tunnel controlled by Vincadi is filled with Dual Elementals, Sclavus, Sishalti Tentacle, Tendrils and Eye Stalks. * A note of caution, these Sishalti cast level 6 harm/drain and vulnerability attacks. It's quite embarrassing to note that a plant with two harm/drain spells killed this author.

Proceed downward, hacking and slashing your way through the dungeon. You will know you are in the right place when you come to a horrific looking jump. There is an invisible ledge in front of the hallway that you are seeking. Jump straight across the room, hitting the wall and slide down onto the ledge.

Continue down until you reach the second jump. Jump down, go through the doorway and continue to fight the creatures. You will soon come to large room that appears to have frost floors. These frost floors can be deadly with their damage and debuffs from the Sishalti. One suggested way to get across the frost floors is to use a dispel gem immediately before jumping and have healers target the jumper. Jump down onto the floor and either jump again or run quickly to the doorway.

After running through some rooms with untargetable Sishalti, you will reach another jump. Once again, jump down and quickly run to the doorway.

Soon you will see the Harbinger on your radar. He will be below you, so there is one final jump. This is a good time to debuff the Harbinger and buff again. The Harbinger is surrounded by elementals, which should be killed before attacking the Harbinger. Be prepared for a difficult long battle with the Harbinger. Reports state that he is weakest to Isparian weapons, bludgeon and pierce attacks.

The Reward

Your killing blow nearly turns Harbinger inside-out!

"It cannot be. I am the well of world blood given consciousness; your blades should not matter. It will not claim me. I am not of darkness borne. I will not fall to darkness. He means to cage me within his tomb of corruption. No! I will stand again, you cannot contain what I am!"

Upon his death, a portal appears and several arms are scatter on the floor. Pick up an arm if you wish to receive the title, "Champion of Dereth." The portal will return you to Yanshi. Give the arm to the Emissary of Asheron near Eastham at (17.8N 64.3E) for the title. Then speak to either Issk or Vincadi (whichever one you gave your item to) and receive your point.

Vincadi tells you, "You have done well to earn your reward."

Vincadi tells you, "Aerbax is pleased with your progress. You have served his research, and mine, very well. With continued effort we shall have the ability to collect the specimen and begin true research. For now, you should rest. I have become aware of an unstable anomaly within the construct of your physical form, and I am afraid that any further tampering with your make-up before this heals could be disastrous.""

This quest has a 30-day timer.

If you die before completing the quest, you do not have to give another item next time you attempt the quest.

If you attempt to speak to the opposing force, you will receive this message,

Issk tells you, "You have chosen to aid the foul Aerbax. You have the stink of corruption already upon you. Leave my presence at once."

Special thanks to the Tabu Monarchy and Asheron's Cadre for their assistance on this quest writeup.
