History of the Empyreans - Appendix: In Defense of Asheron
As he is the only Empyrean we know of, Asheron has come under considerable scrutiny from those who study Lore. Some consider him a fool, incompetent, or a meddler. Others consider him an almost omnipotent being. It is the opinion of this author that he is none of these. He is simply a man gifted with an incredible intellect who has been forced into situations he is simply incapable of dealing with easily.
It is said that the scholars of the city of Tirethas on Ispar can contemplate the nature of the universe and the character of man, but forget to lace their boots. What this illustrates is that a mind capable of incredible insights may be deficient in other areas. Asheron may be such a man. He is capable of combining diverse elements, seeing the underlying whole and structure, and showing an incredible insight into how things can be used together. He may not, however, be equipped to deal with the pressures that have been placed upon him, from the death of his father, who he may have never known, to the sacrifice of his mother’s life to preserve his own, to the fall and loss of his people, to our accidental arrival in Dereth. Through all of these situations, all the grief, Asheron has continued. In similar circumstances, could we have done the same? From what this author can see, Asheron may not have done the best that could have been done, but he did to the best he was capable of doing.
While some revel in destroying the character of this man, this author urges all to consider the nature of him and his history. He is not a god. He is not a demon. He is simply a man who through misfortune came to be in a position none would envy.
