Weapon Tinkering

Weapon Tinkering allows a player to modify five facets of a weapon: damage variance, damage/damage modifier, speed, attack modifier, and defense modifier. This skill challenges our previous trade templates by using the Focus and Strength attributes, instead of Focus and Coordination. Weapon Tinkering costs 4 skill credits, and cannot be specialized. Once you have salvaged 100 units, you are ready to modify an item.

The possible modifications for Weapon Tinkering are:

  • Increase "Melee Defense" bonus on weapons
  • Increase "Attack Defense" bonus on weapons
  • Reduce "Weapon speed"
  • Increase maximum damage (melee weapons)
  • Increase damage modifier (missle weapons)
  • Improve weapon variance

In addition, weapons can be imbued with some of the same effects as magic items. Specifically,

  • Critical Strike: Applying this effect to a weapon or wand increases the chance of inflicting a critical hit when wielding this item. The percentage of increase is determined by the base skill of the character wielding the item.
  • Crippling Blow: This effect increases the amount of damage a weapon or wand does when it causes a critical hit. Again the higher your base skill, the more damage you will do when causing a critical hit.
  • Armor Rending: This enhancement allows a weapon to ignore a portion of the target's total armor, including the value added by a shield. The effect is similar to the effect of Phantom weapons. The percentage of armor the weapon ignores is based upon the base skill of the character.

When Tinkering was first introduced, a group of folks on #acdev discussed the pros and cons of "Improving weapon variance" vs "Improving maximum damage(melee weapons)". The general consensus was that improving max damage was better, based on the following formula (thanks to Eckzow for this!):

average Damage Over Time formula (where d is the weapon's base damage, v is variance): (d+(d-(d+v)))/2

During the Festivus event, the weapon variance benefit changed from being an additive effect to being a multiplicative effect - (d+(d-(d*v)))/2 - but this change was not retroactive. Items that had already been Tinkered received no benefit from the change. Because of this change, the consensus is now that improving variance is the better route, since variance is a significant part of the formula.

During the "Swelling Tide" event, several new imbues were added to the Weapon Tinkering skill. A "Resistance Rending" imbue, with one "Rending" per damage type, can be applied to any treasure-generated melee weapon, missile weapon, or magic caster, but remember that an item can only ever be imbued with one effect, so choose carefully! Too, note that the magnitude of the Resistance Rending effect depends on the attack skill of the weapon's wielder.

During the "Mired Hearts" event, an imbue underlay color was added.
