Magic Item Tinkering
Magic Item Tinkering was introduced during the "Atonement" event (August, 2002). The Letter to Players mentions that the new effects could be a partial implementation of this unique tinkering skill. The process of tinkering an item in this fashion is perhaps better described as "Imbuing". This skill uses just the focus attribute, and costs 4 skill points to train. It cannot be specialized.
Magic Item Imbuing enhancements can only be applied once, and do not layer. Thus, you can not apply all three effects to an item and count on them all being active. The way that Magic Item Imbuing behaves is somewhat similar to the totems of Palenqual's Living Weapons.
Rumour has it that imbuing an item is more difficult than other Tinkering operations. Also, the Imbue still counts as a tinkering operation, so don't forget to subtract the imbue from your remaining tinkering modifications. To see the effectiveness of a given imbue, please refer to the Imbue Effects Table link in the upper right hand corner.
The modifications for Magic Item Imbuing are as follows:
- Critical Strike: Applying this effect to a weapon or wand increases the chance of inflicting a critical hit when wielding this item. The percentage of increase is determined by the base skill of the character wielding the item.
- Crippling Blow: This effect increases the amount of damage a weapon or wand does when it causes a critical hit. Again the higher your base skill, the more damage you will do when causing a critical hit.
- Armor Rending: This enhancement allows a weapon to ignore a portion of the target's total armor, including the value added by a shield. The effect is similar to the effect of Phantom weapons. The percentage of armor the weapon ignores is based upon the base skill of the character. This effect is not available for wands because war magic already ignores physical armor and armor spells.
As of the Oct 2002 Patch, Festivus, we now have a normal tinker effect for Magic Item Tinkering rather than another Imbue.
- Increase Bonus to Mana Conversion
With the "Swelling Tide" event, Imbuing Jewelry was added to the Magic Item Tinkerer's skills. Imbuing a piece of jewelry uses raises the Arcane Lore requirement and the Spellcraft of the piece by 25 points.
