Lockpicking

Sometimes, you just can't go barging in through the front door. Sometimes it takes a little finesse to open it. That's where a Lockpicker's skill comes in. Opening long-sealed doors and cracking the seals on ancient chests have long been the purview of those with the skill.

Lockpicking isn't restricted to just opening doors. It also deals with the use of small, intricate tools. Many monsters in Dereth leave behind valuable gifts. The hearts of some golems, Virindi keys, or Dark Keys can be made into valuable keys by the skilled lockpicker. The hearts of other golems can be made into keyrings, to store those keys!

A Lockpicker's Tools

There are many locked doors and chests in Dereth. Lockpicking will open the wonders inside, or the peril awaiting. Lockpicks come in various qualities and uses. They can be bought in stores, or looted from monsters. Picks are unique in that they give a flat bonus to your lockpicking skill. When opening a door, compare the door's resistance to your skill plus the appropriate bonus of the pick. A lockpick can only be used certain times, and one of these uses will be expended whether you successfully pick the lock or not. The lockpick skill is needed to appraise both lockpicks and locked doors.

Use a ring on a given key to add the key to the ring - up to 24 per ring. Use an intricate carving tool on the keyring to pop a key off again. Note: Removing a key does NOT require the lockpick skill! Adding a key uses up one of the ring's remaining uses, but removing one does not.
